I Can’t Even Draw a Straight Line
Architects have heard this time and time again and truth is, the process of Architecture is rarely a straight path. There are inevitable hiccups, but it’s how you plan for and then address them that matters most. Case in point:
Project teams design a cutting edge Health Science Building Campus. They work with adjacent neighbors in order to follow the entire project through to completion. Successful communication progresses for months and schematic design is almost complete; then boom, funding stops.
After several stakeholders meetings, it’s decided that one project will become two independent projects. Phase One is to include a parking deck and Phase Two completes the project with the Health Science Building. A plan is realized and classes will go on!
With the decision to split the project, teams and contracts are adjusted allowing demolition and swing space renovations to start early. The initial project scope hasn’t changed, but it is altered and requires modification and flexibility. This shift creates ultimately two projects with two general contractors all working with one architect. The necessary juggling is successful and projects are on time with budget savings as a bonus. And to add more positive outcome to what may have been seen as a stumbling block, the savings from Phase One and Phase Two combined is used to build another parking structure.

Who says you can’t create something from nothing?
Yes, DESIGN is steel and glass buildings, cars and bikes, but great DESIGN also focuses on enhancing human health in the built environment. BUILDING HUMAN ASPIRATIONS, pllc utilizes 25 years of experience to generate innovative solutions for both.
The passion for health in the built environment is demonstrated best by a unique collaboration between Douglas Hall, AIA founder of BUILDING HUMAN ASPIRATIONS pllc, Daniel Hightower and Charles Blumberg of The National Institute of Health. They worked together, using skill and knowledge from different disciplines to forge a fresh perspective on the issue. Their efforts led to each becoming Core Founding Members of the Health in Buildings Round Table, which has affected change by prospering and growing the organization to become a national monthly forum and an annual conference.
The collaboration doesn’t end there. They continued pushing the issue in development efforts for North Carolina Healthy Building Institute. The Institute is referenced by Judith Heerwagen Phd in a white paper prepared for NIEHS, “The North Carolina initiative coalesces around a series of questions: Why aren’t buildings certified as “healthy”? Why doesn’t research on related topics feed into design, construction and operation of buildings? The initiative, aims to enhance building practices through education to incorporate existing knowledge as well as to facilitate and conduct new quantitative research of value.”
